Flint + Birch is an online apparel brand I founded in 2020. It focuses on science and outdoor inspired designs with clean minimalist designs. The target audience is outdoor enthusiasts and science "nerds" of all ages who love the wonders of nature both on earth and beyond. In addition to t-shirts and outerwear, Flint + Birch also offers designs on select home good products and framed art prints.
The name Flint + Birch was carefully considered. It works as a play on "fire and wood." It is only 3 syllables with a rhythm that is easy to say. And, it is broad enough to allow expansion into other product categories and target audiences in the future.
Flint + Birch is "apparel for adventurous spirits and curious minds."
The primary logo consists of "Flint + Birch" in hand crafted custom uppercase serif lettering. The words are stacked with the plus symbol and a dividing line in the center. The R of Birch features an extended leg to form a descender curving below the adjacent C. Finally, the logo features a subtle weathered texture. There is also a single line horizontal variant for use where vertical space is limited.
In addition, an icon mark was created by combining the letters F and B into a tight configuration with the + symbol replacing the bar of the former and apex of the latter.
The primary logo and the icon mark are not intended to be used together, but instead as substitutes for one another as warranted.
Flint + Birch is marketed primarily through social media. Product advertisements focus on displaying the garments on models, as opposed to lying flat on a backdrop, to showcase the wearability of the designs. Engagement style posts consist of curated adventurous photography, sometimes accompanied by an inspirational quote.
